Multi-version backup is the best way to protect your data against ransomware. Cryptolocker, CryptoWall and others like it are viruses classified under the “ransomware” category. These viruses take your data, encrypt it, and then hold it ransom for hundreds or thousands of dollars with no guarantee to recover your information once the ransom is paid.
Mountain west computers always recommends having multiple versions of your data, and in multiple locations. These means:
- The original local copy of your data
- A network backup onto another computer, server or NAS
- Then a cloud(offsite) backup with a service like MW Cloud
This way if your computer, server, or both become infected, then there is always either another local copy or an offsite copy on the cloud that has not been infected.
